About Heather

Heather originally studied 3D design at Belfast art college and after graduating specialised in Goldsmithing. She undertook further studies in Kilkenny and Copenhagen before establishing a successful Goldsmithing Business in Newtownards. During a career break to raise a family Heather began teaching silversmithing in what is now Belfast Metropolitan College and over time diversified into a range of other crafts. During her time at BMC her students won a number of key UK awards for their work. Additionally, Heather has worked as a part-time consultant for City & Guilds in the development of Goldsmithing courses/exams for the international market.

Heather's Workshop

Heather’s workshop is set in a restored, stone-built, former pig house dating from the early 1830s. It has been fitted out as a dedicated training facility with “goldsmith” benches and a comprehensive range of metalworking equipment. From her workshop, Heather runs a range of Jewellery making classes, with a particular emphasis on fine metalworking in copper, silver, and gold.

In 2018 the workshop was extended with a log cabin that provides additional space for display cases, coffee breaks, and restroom facilities. The log cabin opens onto a sheltered patio area where visitors can take in the tranquillity of the location during coffee breaks.

Jewellery Classes

With Heather’s technical knowledge and teaching experience, she is able to provide a range of courses that are structured to maximise progress for each student’s individual requirement and capability. Courses cover the full range from beginner through intermediate to bespoke classes on more advanced techniques of silver and goldsmithing. Class size is typically limited to 4 students to ensure that each participant gains the maximum benefit from the experience.

The courses are “hands-on” and take students through a range of techniques culminating in the production of a ring, pendant, or another item of jewellery. Images of the typical sample pieces are shown in our gallery.

Our Location

Gobbins Crafts is located on the Gobbins Road in Islandmagee. The rural location has views across the Irish Sea to Scotland. There is off road parking to the rear of the house. Upon arrival, you will likely be greeted by our pair of African Geese or some of our rescue chickens. The geese can get quite vocal but are very friendly.

We are less than 10 minutes drive from the Gobbins Cliff Path visitor centre so why not make a day of it in Islandmagee and visit both.

Other attractions within a short drive of the workshop are Kilcoan Gardens, Portmuck Harbour, Brown’s Bay beach, Whitehead village and the Blackhead Path.

Holiday Closure

From 14th April to 29th April.
During this period the workshop and showroom will be closed.
Additionally the on-line shop will be closed as we will be unavailable to process sales.
